Swedish supermarket grows its own in-store

Supermarket Swegreen, is using hydroponics and vertical farming to grow produce locally. In fact, vert locally, as in in-store.

Saga, as the cultivation platform is called, obviously keeps produce fresher, but also significantly reduces the environmental footprint associated with conventional farming practices by minimising transportation.

“With the launch of Saga, we have opened up a new segment for Swegreen, targeting smaller stores such as ICA Supermarket Rimforsa and ICA Supermarket Sävja. The flexibility of this platform allows us to take the benefits of store farming to a wider audience and ensure that fresh, locally grown products are available all year round,” said Swegreen's CEO Pierre Mohlin.
