EV market share passes 30 per cent in the EU as it accelerated sharply in August, with 202,833 EVs registered across 16 key markets, a 54.2 per cent year-on-year increase.
The analysis, from New AutoMotive and E-Mobility Europe showed that EVs accounted for 30.5 percent of new car registrations, taking year-to-date sales to 1.67 million, up 33.1 per cent on 2025 and running ahead of several forecasts made at the start of 2026.
For example, T&E forecast a 23 per cent EV share, while Rho Motion forecast an EV share of around 21 per. The IEA expected EV sales, including PHEVs, to grow by around 20 per cent and reach a one-in-three share of new cars. With EV registrations across the 16 key markets already up 33.1 per cent year-to-date, EV sales alone are already exceeding forecasts for the entire plug-in market (EVs and PHEVs combined).
France and Germany are driving the acceleration. France reached a 38.3 per cent EV share in August, with registrations up 72.2 per cent year-on-year. Germany recorded a 32.5 per cent share and 34.5 per cent growth, with 68,980 EVs registered in the month.
Some smaller markets are already well beyond the average, with Denmark reaching an 85.9 per cent EV share and Finland 52.3 per cent. Norway remains almost entirely electric, with EVs accounting for 98.7 per cent of August registrations.
