New Zealand politician David Seymour has raised the concept of the country leaving the Paris Climate Agreement.
Seymour, who currently serves as the First Minister for Regulation in the Sixth National Government under Christopher Luxon, has proposed leaving at the next election.
According to the New Zealand Herald Seymour questioned whether it was logical to continue with Paris with so many other countries, and by here we probably mean the US, pulling out, and when New Zealand would need to offshore carbon reductions at the expense of its own economy.
After the US exited the agreement, several other countries have also questioned their membership, including Indonesia, a major contributor to emissions.
New Zealand published its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets recently and committed to reducing emissions by 51 per cent to 55 per cent below 2005 levels by 2035, and its EU and UK trade agreements include commitments to Paris.
