Britain’s largest wind turbines, each at 919ft, have approval to go ahead, but not everyone is happy.
Chinese company SDIC Power, through subsidiary Red Rock Renewables intends to build the turbines at the Inch Cape Wind Farm off the coast of Scotland.
However, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) amongst others, have been challenging the project, saying the Inch Cape project will have adverse effects on bird populations with potential for bird collisions, displacement of birds from important feeding and breeding grounds, and habitat disturbance.
In 2016, SDIC Power purchased the Red Rock Power and as a result, now owns the Inch Cape project, and after three years' development, succeeded in getting the approval for expanding the installed capacity of the offshore wind farm project from the previous 684MW to 1GW, with single turbine capacity increased to 15MW. In 2020, SDIC Power introduced ESB as its strategic partner and in 2022, joined the fourth-round bidding in the CfD auction.
