Matrix Renewables has successfully reached £245m of financing to support the construction of a large-scale, transmission-connected 500MW BESS project located in Eccles–Leitholm, in southern Scotland.
Strategically located along main transmission corridors between Scotland and England, construction on the Eccles battery storage facility commenced in November 2025, with commercial operations expected in the third quarter of 2027 under a partnership with EDF.
Once operational, the Eccles BESS is expected to provide sufficient flexibility services to support the equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 270,000 households and avoid an estimated 170,000 tonnes of carbon-equivalent emissions per year.
The financing was provided by CIBC’s London Branch, MUFG Bank and NatWest, with NatWest also acting as facility agent.
Matrix Renewables’ current portfolio is comprised of 15.5GW of solar, storage and green hydrogen projects in Europe, US, and Latin America.
