Miliband faces hard questions at the Commons Select Committee

Just ahead of an appearance before Parliament’s Energy Security and Net Zero Committee of Ed Miliband, the Committee it has set out its main questions over the UK’s transition to greener energy.

When will our electricity get cheaper: Cost will be a main question, along with the timing of a move away from gas as the basis of both our energy supply and its price.

The Committee will also explore scaling up renewable infrastructure and overcoming the planning barriers but will also question the national security concerns about ownership of renewable technologies, particularly in light of the rapidly changing geopolitical situation.

Perhaps the thorniest question for Miliband will be over the cost of the Government’s massive investment in ‘carbon capture and storage’ technologies, and the effectiveness of the unproven technology. The Committee even asks: “Why are the UK public being asked to contribute to an unproven technology that may not significantly ‘move the dial’ on carbon emissions in time to meet the UK’s clean energy targets, but does reduce available investment for scaling up renewables and improving the national grid?”

Parliament’s Energy Security and Net Zero Committee scrutinises the policy, spending and administration of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and its public bodies, including Ofgem and the Committee on Climate change.
