What’s gone on in Liverpool?

The Labour Party Conference has been in swing this week, if a little deflated one as it grapples with the lowest ever poll ratings for its leaders. Still, at least Ed Miliband was in zealous form.

If he was mainly playing to the gallery (and possible leadership ambitions) with attacks on Musk and Farage (pro tip here: don’t mention your enemies) he did at least make some comments on sustainable energy.

Calling clean energy, the “best chance” he blamed gas prices as the reason for increasing energy bills and praised it as a huge opportunity for creating jobs. Mentioning “working people”, that great nebulous phrase, several times, Miliband promised jobs in hydrogen, offshore wind and carbon capture and storage.

Among those not convinced has been Unite’s Sharon Graham, who yesterday called for his sacking over the approach to net zero, a “disaster” she said in light of one of the UK’s last oil refineries being scheduled for closure, and another blow for energy security.
