£800m wasted on heat pump subsidies?

So, The Telegraph is hardly the biggest fan of the current Government, but its analysis suggests a third of funding, or £800m, has been spent on heat pump installations would have happened regardless.

Net-zero has always had a political dimension, but of late it has drifted onto the main battleground, with erratic efficiency ratings, constant rowing forwards and backwards, the controversial ban on new oil licences in the North Sea, levies for renewable energy and the Grid, funding for unproven carbon storage and subsidies.

Against a bleak economic background and wars, with resultant high energy prices, the political needle has constantly shifted, if not the policies.

It could, of course, squally be argued that the end justifies the means, and if some waste happens, overall a move to heat pumps is such a benefit that it is worth it.

The BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) introduced by the Conservative government has seen a dramatic expansion under Labour, and planning laws amended to make installation possible right up to as property’s boundary.
