Farmers revolt at green rules

Protests by farmers across the EU are congealing into more focussed political action, with agendas to end what they see as excessive green policies, prioritise products produced in Europe and reduce import trade agreements including grain from Ukraine.

To say the Common Agricultural Policy has always been contentious is to put it mildly, but with a raft of extra rules designed abate climate change farmers across the bloc have made their disagreement very evident, and with the elections coming up there is a political element too.

On Wednesday morning farmers blocked several routes across Spain, causing traffic jams in Guadalajara, Málaga, Seville and Toledo, amongst others.
