A record 56 per cent of Spain's 2024 electricity has been generated from renewable sources according to estimates grid operator Red Electrica de Espana (REE).
This would represent an increase of over 10 per cent on the previous year with149 TWh.
Wind led the charge at nearly a quarter of generation, nuclear second and solar third as fossil fuels declined sharply and coal was nearly eliminated from the mix.
Spain has seen a surge in renewable power and is planning interconnections with France and Portugal with the view to net exporting of power.
REE estimates it could receive €71.4m as a result of the annual capacity exchange tenders for interconnections with France and Portugal by 2025. This amount will be allocated to cover interconnection management costs and reduce costs in the Spanish electrical system.
