In light of the current geo-political uncertainties, and energy crunch, the Government has been exploring several ways to try and ease energy costs and increase security.
The Financial Times is reporting that the Chancellor is advocating limits to judicial reviews on green energy projects that are deemed of ‘critical national importance’.
Reeves' new proposed planning reforms could give parliament direct powers to overrule legal objections. It would hardly be the first time the Government has proposed tinkering with the UK’s legal system if it feels it is getting in the way of its ‘vision’. If these proposals were to be enacted, then it would also set timeframe for objections over other significant infrastructure such as transport and water projects, perhaps having experienced issues over HS2.
Other, rather more strange ideas include allowing a lifting of some sanctions on Russian oil products. There are, as yet, no signs of relenting on North Sea oil production however.
