Nissan has set a price for its new Micra EV, a direct competitor to Renault’s new 5 EV, and the first of a trio of EVs to come from the Sunderland plant as the company gears up for an electric future, with the Micra arriving ahead of the next generation of Leaf and the Juke EV.
The Nissan plant is undergoing a period of expansion and change as it transitions to making electric vehicles. In May, partner company Envision received £1bn of funding for a Sunderland battery plant to supply the car maker, and the plants forms a main part of Nissan's long-term vision, Ambition 2030, that will deliver electrified to support Nissan’s goal to be carbon neutral across the life cycle of its products and operations by 2050.
The new Micra is based on the same basic platform as the Renault 5, not surprisingly given the development partnership between the two companies.
James Taylor, MD of Nissan GB said “Micra is the first of four new fully electric models to arrive on the Nissan line up and we are incredibly excited to be pricing it so competitively. Micra is a key strategic model for Nissan, and based on the positive reviews, exciting design, attractive price and a class-leading product, I am looking forward to seeing lots of new Micras on the road soon.”
