The National Energy System Operator (NESO) has reported that two solar records were broken this week, with the highest generating 14GW.
In addition, on 25 March at 1:30pm, Great Britain achieved a new maximum Wind generation record of 24GW. At the time, Wind was providing 60 per cent of Great Britain’s electricity. Across the month, wind was Great Britain’s largest source of electricity generation, providing 34.8 per cent. Gas came second at 22.2 per cent.
Jess Ralston, head of energy at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), said: “Solar helps shield households from volatility on gas markets by reducing the amount of fuel we need to buy from other countries. The war in Iran has been a sobering reminder of this with bills expected to suffer as a result. Every wind turbine and solar panel installed helps the UK become more energy independent and electricity prices more stable - and with records regularly being broken, and the Government approving the UK's largest solar farm today, this impact is clearly set to continue."
