King’s Speech comes clean

Energy figured prominently in the State Opening of Parliament. Indeed, it was the first of the three main topics, the others being defence and economic security.

Aside from the usual waffle on fairness, “working people” and “growth” etc, boiler plated from every Number 10 endorsed speech, the smoke signals indicated more public investment to “shape markets”. For which, read more budget to renewables amongst others.

Stating that energy independence is the long-term goal, the King spoke of increased production of clean British energy will “help to ensure that enemies of the United Kingdom cannot attack the economic security of the British people”.

Which is good news, but as always the Devil will be in the detail, and whenever a politician says that they will introduce a Bill (in this case the Energy Independence Bill to scale-up homegrown renewable energy and protect living standards for the long-term) you worry that little bit more that there will be plenty of worthy words and a tonne of red tape.

More outward looking, the Speech included promises to remain a leading advocate for tackling climate change and achieving a world free from poverty (yes, really!). I mean it’s a great idea, but how exactly?

Anyway, assuming that the present Government stays the course one way or another, then there are more than a few good bits in there to encourage the sector, and individuals to swap out fossil fuel for renewables.

Jess Ralston, head of energy at ECIU commented: "The Government is sticking with clean power as its solution to two energy crises in a matter of years, in line with the International Energy Agency's recommendations.”
