Carmakers recharge electric dreams

Toyota is expanding its battery electric SUV model range and Ford is investing in its own European EVs.

Toyota is to introduce a series of new battery electric models to the European market, joining the company’s multi-pathway technology approach to achieving carbon neutrality in the region by 2035.

By the end of 2025, Toyota will have new products competing at the heart of the key European automotive SUV market segments and each will carry Toyota’s Battery Care Programme, covering the battery each year of up to ten years of vehicle age or up to 650,000 miles driven.

Toyota will continue to grow its EV range and deliver on its ambition to reveal six new EV models by the end of 2026 and will look to introduce the technology in other vehicle types.

Meanwhile, Ford is investing $4.8bn in its German operations in a gamble to transform the marque. EVs will form a part of this plan, but Ford has warned that it needs clearer governmental guidelines in order to transition amid a series of row backs by European governments and the EU.

The company’s German operations have reportedly been struggling as the move to EVs and increasing international competition has caught EU makers off guard. German manufacturers including VW and Porsche, and suppliers, have also been forced into layoffs as demand falls and costs rise. The threat of US tariffs has further deepened the crisis.
