March of the pylons

Electric pylons remain the most effective way to transmit electricity across the UK.

That is the conclusion of a letter sent by Labour MPs to Ed Miliband, and supports Keir Starmer’s stance that, although unpopular, he is willing to herald a march od the pylons to deliver on key parts of his agenda.

Key to the issue is the time taken to bury cables as opposite to the rapid deployment of overhead lines, with the cables being underground estimated to take four years longer, but cheaper.

With a “legally-binding” target of achieving clean power by 2030, the Government faces a need to create a new network of transmission lines, and although there have been reports that burying cables could be cheaper in the long run, the decision has rapidly descended into a political battle, with Conservative and Green MPs backing burying, and Labour MPs looking to the skies.
