Last UK coal-fired station closes

The UK's last remaining coal-fired power station will be decommissioned in the coming weeks.

The Ratcliffe-on-Soar hard coal power plant, situated in Nottinghamshire, has been in operation for over five decades, opening in1968, but will finally end its run on 30 September with decommissioning starting immediately.

The station has long been a landmark, including to this writer, and the imposing cooling towers seen as a prominent feature from M1.

Owned and operated by energy giant Uniper, the station has a capacity of 2TW, and can emit up to 10 million tonnes of CO2 annually.

Uniper has floated plans for the site to become a clean energy technology hub.
