More chargers that pumps

The Department for Transport (DfT) has released figures that show that there are now “considerably more” public EV chargers than fuel pumps in the UK.

The conclusion is based on three main sources: the official statistics on electric vehicle public charging infrastructure in the UK, a report from the Petrol Retailers Association (PDF) and research undertaken by Deloitte on behalf of the RAC Foundation (PDF).

The Petrol Retailers Association’s 2025 market review reported that, as of 11 November 2024, there were 8,329 petrol stations operating in the UK (PDF). Assuming 7.3 pumps as an average per station, then there will be around 61,000 fuel pumps across the UK against 116,000 EV chargers.

The very encouraging figure is possibly dampened a little as it must be remembered that a pump is used for minutes, charging can be up to several hours, but home chargers and fleet are not counted in the assessment.
