Electric Vehicles UK is warning that the trade deal with the US might mean a limit on Chinese EVs, seen as vital to expand the use of electric cars.
Whether the influx of Chinses cars is a good thing or not, it is currently likely that any limit would slow the UK’s transition to EVs. Taken alongside the reprieve given to hybrids, the plugless variety receiving a stay of execution in the 2030–2035 ZEV phase-out, the organisation says that such a move could hurt the transition to battery electric and still be “unlikely” to protect the UK's car industry.
Electric Vehicles UK said: “Competition drives affordability. Chinese brands have accelerated the market shift toward more accessible EVs. Established automakers are responding with better battery EVs. That's a good thing. Diluting the ZEV mandate and threatening trade-based tariffs only adds to this uncertainty.”
