SSE’s Ferrybridge Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in West Yorkshire is fully operational.
One of Britain’s largest battery storage projects, the 150MW/300MWh project benefits from its location on the site of the former 2GW Ferrybridge power station which was decommissioned in 2016.
Construction at Ferrybridge began in August 2023 and saw the installation of 136 battery units supplied by Sungrow as well as an associated 132kv transformer at the site. Construction works were led by principal contractor for the project, OCU Energy.
Ferrybridge is SSE’s second battery storage project to enter operation, following the commissioning of the 50MW/100MWh Salisbury BESS in April 2024. Its completion takes SSE’s operational battery fleet capacity to 200MW/400MWh, with a further 470MW/940MWh of battery storage capacity under construction including the 320MW/640MWh Monk Fryston BESS in North Yorkshire and the 150MW/300MWh Fiddler’s Ferry BESS in Ches
