Paul McCartney has asked the EU to abandon is labelling plans that would effectively ban Linda McCartney’s vegetarian suages and other products.
Linda McCartney started her vegetarian range of foods in 1991 but died in 1998. Now as part of the EU’s attempt to prevent non-meat products as being given ‘misleading’ names such as burger or sausage, the famous line faces a ban.
UK MPs are rallying around the plant-based products, asking for the proposed restrictions to be dropped. Given there is no evidence that any consumer has ever been confused as to the ingredients of the vegetarian products, it would seem a rather pointless waste of the EU’s time.
None-the-less, in October, MEPs voted in favour reserving the words steak, burger and sausage for meat products. Furthermore, even the UK could, due top increasing alignment with EU rules, could be forced to abandon the traditional names.
