First of its kind green hydrogen plant

The first of its kind green hydrogen plant, combining four different sectors: electricity, transport, heating and hydrogen, has been constructed in Finland.

Finnish energy company Helen has appointed constructor Sweco to build the plant, and the two companies have a long relationship in creating such ventures. The 3H2 Helsinki Hydrogen Hub will be a pilot plant with the capacity of approximately 3MW and production to start in 2026, with the aim of supplying the heavy-duty transport sector. The excess heat from production will be utilised in Helen’s district heating network and is expected to increase the plant’s energy efficiency to over 90 per cent.

Finland aims to be carbon neutral by 2035. To be successful, the Finnish government has approved a plan in which Finland aims to produce at least 10 per cent of all green hydrogen within the EU by 2030. It is estimated that the amount of hydrogen used in Finland, which currently stands at approximately 140 kilo tonnes per year, will be doubled within the next 10–15 years.
