Drax has announced that up to 350 job roles could be at risk as it considers “evolving its strategy".
Drax has made it clear that it is looking to diversify its energy generation sources, and in particular looking at sustainable biomass and carbon capture. Naturally, this means some reorganisation.
However, Deanne Ferguson, senior organiser, at the GMB union commented: “You can't build a low-carbon future by making skilled energy workers redundant. A just transition means secure jobs, proper planning and workers at the heart of change. Ministers need to step in and make sure the reality matches their rhetoric.”
Given the overt plans of Labour’s policies, this does seem somewhat idealistic interpretation of what a transition might require, but as Ferguson signs off: "GMB will fight for nothing less”.
