SSE Renewables will proceed with the construction of one of the UK’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Monk Fryston, Yorkshire with a 320MW / 640MWh grid-scale battery.

Battery and storage technologies will be vital to smoothing out demand and generation differences as the UK continues its journey to renewables.

In addition, the 320MW battery will be located next to National Grid’s substation. By directly connecting the battery to the existing transmission network without the need for additional grid infrastructure, the construction can minimise the built infrastructure impact on the surrounding environment.

SSE Renewables’ Solar and Battery pipeline portfolio currently comprises four projects in delivery in the UK totalling 550MW, including: a 50MW BESS site in Salisbury, a 150MW BESS site in Ferrybridge, a 30MW solar farm in Littleton, and the 320MW BESS site at Monk Fryston. A 150MW BESS site in the former SSE coal-power station at Fiddler’s Ferry has also been consented, with construction potentially commencing as early as 2024 subject to reaching a final decision.
